Here's a piece that was sent to us by our friend, Alan Flacks :
The long-overdue pay increase for judges -- and there hasn't even been a cost-of-living increase in about a decade -- has been stymied in the State Legislature because judicial pay raises are tied to legislators' pay increases. It would appear that it is a situation of "If I don't get, you don't get."
Assembly member Linda B. Rosenthal (67th A.D.) and State Senator Eric T. Schneiderman (31st S.D.), are attempting to break this impasse and have sponsored bills ( A.09370 & S.06372 ) to amend the Judiciary Law to provide salary increases without this interlock.
The bill would increase annual salaries for state-paid judges -- but not for non-judicial personnel -- and would make them retroactive to 2005. (New York City Housing Court Hearing Officers would also get an increase.) A commission would also be established to make recommendations on compensation and on non-salary benefits.
Thanks, Alan. But, you left out a key piece of information.
If passed, it is estimated that some $48 MILLION would be needed to implement those increases.
Where is that money coming from? (From a reduction in legislators' salaries?)
