WHY ARE NORA'S PEOPLE SO MAD?
A friend reports that fists were flying at a fundraiser held yesterday for Nora Anderson, candidate for New York County Surrogate's Court Judge.
Here's what D. Clark MacPherson independently reported on his blog, Soho Politics:
At a fundraiser held this Saturday, Bernie Cohen, former attorney and consultant for Nora Anderson's Surrogate's Court bid - a lucrative position - apparently took a swing at Eben Bronfman, Special Assistant to D.A. Bob Morgenthau. It connected.
Bronfman, who was holding his daughter's hand at the time and was about to leave, caught the unexpected punch. Various obscenities accompanied the blow.
Apparently, Eben has been seen in the company of Anderson's opponent (Milton Tingling) and he speculates that this was the reason for Cohen's actions.
Bronfman, however, wasn't amused that he received this "show of emotion" in front of 80 people.
It's a hot July.
We have no indication whether charges will be filed.
It may be a hot July, folks, but it looks like the New York County Surrogate's race is just heating up.

The Anderson campaign responds:
First of all, there was no Nora fundraiser that night. It was a birthday party for a club member. I have the invite if you'd like to see it. I doubt the club was having a birthday party for one person and a fundraiser for another on the same night! I also doubt an adviser, whether formally or otherwise, to a rival campaign would be at an Anderson fundraiser. It's funny what you can figure out when you put two and two together. The event had nothing to do with Nora, short of her stopping by for an hour or so to say hi to club members who are working for her. The argument between Bernie and Eben had nothing to do with Nora, but a trial involving Eben and his ex wife. Eben knows this. I don't have any further details. It's between them, and it's what I heard them talking about while personally breaking it up. I could care less about the case. Also, no child was in the area at the time of the very minor scuffle. No one got punched either. It was more like light petting if you ask me. Neither of them was getting through me anyway. Last but not least, Bernie is not a paid consultant, nor an advisor or fundraiser, on Nora's campaign. Nora is paying rent to Midtown Consultants in order to use the facilities at the club. People have tried to post to the "blog" that posted this, but of course the comments with the facts do not show up. Much ado about nothing.

Never a good idea to hit anyone in a room full of witnesses. Especially politically connected ones, given this was a fundraiser.
Also not a good idea to hit someone when they've got their kid next to them.

How cool! This sounds like the setup for a good, old school duel. As the father of a nine year old girl, I volunteer to be the second for the guy who got swung at in front of his daughter. Hell, I'll even bring the guns.

Why is everyone ignoring what is going on in New York County?
Brooklyn always gets a bad rap for being corrupt, yet Ms Anderson's got a disbarred attorney raising money for her. While Judge Milton Tinging has Ravi Batra, as his Finance Director. A lawyer who has had his own share of scandals.
Get those cow chips off your shoulders, you delusional Manhattanites! You're just as dirty as we are (if not DIRTIER)!

The way the Andersen people describe it, it sounds more like foreplay.
While I had trouble believing the story, I find the campaign's explantion even more confusing.
It wasn't a fundraiser, it was her campaign headquarters. That makes it worse!
And, two grown men decide to "pet" each other while at a birthday party.
Makes absolute sense.

Mr. Oliva,
The filing posted on the Board Elections website says that the Anderson campaign is paying $5,000 a month to Midtown Consultants. That's a lot of rent
for a campaign. Do the facilities include a pool and health club?

In response to Michael Oliva... I am grateful he did get in front of Bernie when he started throwing punches. And he correct it was NOT a fundraiser for anyone or for the McManus club it was a birthday party for an important club member--making it all the more outragous that Bernie would choose to throw a punch (not a pet!) and spew obsecenties at me. And my daughter was standing next to me at the time as the other 50 or so people can attest to... As to the content of Bernie's vitriol, it WAS directed primarily at my personal life--but, not with regards to my ex-wife but her mother who is in the process of trying have her and her children evicted from their home... Our interests are the same here keeping her , my child and her other children housed! But, in any event it is really none of Bernies business and he should get the facts correct! And learn some manners! Thanks again to Michael!

Tomas, that's sorta like blaming someone for a robbery when their house is broken into.
As for the petting, I agree, rather strange, but I'm a live and let live sorta guy.
Justcurious, believe me with this heat I wish there were a spa and pool in here! Running around and campaigning all day sure makes for building up quite a sweat, and can be rather draining.
The phrase "to use the facilities at the club" would be an obvious explanation to anyone with a fair amount of campaign experience, but rather than go through the myriad here I'd like to invite you to join me for a day and learn what it's really all about. Just be warned, it's hot out! My real name and email are listed. Give me a holler.
..and still, I keep reminding myself, drink alot of water.

It was a birthday party for the office manager at the McManus Club. Club members were there wishing him well. Music was playing, food was being eaten, and the light petting which occurred, was inappropriate and rude to the birthday boy who spent the last week setting up his party.
As for the health club and pool, they are closed on the weekends.
Happy Birthday Singh

Eben, thanks for setting the story straight.
It just goes to show anyone can say anything about anything and a bunch of people will jump in and believe it, even when it makes no sense on its face...
Does it make sense to you that a bunch of people in a room supporting the same candidate and giving money would break out into a fight?? Of course not.
I don't know the nature of what was going on...and I didn't see much. I just knew enough to try and get in the way so Singh's party would not be ruined. Your case is private, and your own. So I don't have an opinion on that.
All I know is I heard nothing about campaigns during what seemed like a very mild incident...Mike

So the check cut by the Anderson campaign to "Bernard Cohen" of no listed address for "reimbursement" in the campaign filing is not the same Bernie Cohen who "petted" Eben Bronfman?
And who runs Midtown Consultants? Would that be the same Bernard Cohen doing the "petting" during the party?
Maybe the Anderson campaign isn't at fault here- you can't be responsible for the actions of other people but if this joker really is on the payroll, it's time he got kicked off. It's bad judgment to act so rudely at a birthday party where other people are trying to celebrate positively. Keeping this person on just implies that this "petting" behavior is acceptable because people should just "live and let live."
You should be ashamed of yourself, Michael Oliva, for not including in your letter an apology to the ONE person who mattered the MOST- Singh. The birthday boy. The person who invited you to this party. That just shows how important he is to you and your people. Maybe we're just all "club members" who just WORK FOR YOU but WE actually care about the people in the club. How much do you care? I noticed the guy on the wrong end of the petting actually states in HIS posting that Singh is an important member of the McManus club. Or did you just forget to mention your host?
Posted by: McManus Club Member 2 | July 28, 2008 5:01 PM
LOL okay feel free to ask Singh how he feels. Actually, he's right here next to me. He's laughing too. He doesn't understand why I should apologize for breaking up a fight.
He also told you to say he thanks me for designing the invitation, getting it printed, getting the list together and doing the mailing. He also said to tell you he says he thanks to me for moving all the furniture the day before for his party.
Give it up already.
Posted by: Michael Oliva | July 28, 2008 5:51 PM
There was no fund-raiser. It was Singh's birhtday.
But the fact is that Bernie Cohen uttered obscenities and then punched Eben Broffman while he held his daughter in front of everyone.
Ask Nora. She was there. This will be a good test to see how a candidate handles the truth, nothing but the truth and the whole truth.

Michael... While I was happy to set the record straight one correction I am not supporting Nora Anderson--I am supporting Milt Tingling, but out of respect for Jim McManus and the club I have taken no position either way at the club.

Contretemps on the hustings. A political "Rashomon." Lovely!
Posted by: Alan Flacks | July 28, 2008 9:26 PM
And lots of alcohol was being consumed at this "birthday party," I'm sure.
Ms. Anderson should not condone violence. Where's her public statement? Where's the indignation? Where's the apology to Eben?
You'll notice Eben's version of what happened conflicts with Michael's -- who supposedly saved Eben from the aggressor. Inconsistencies abound.
What's clear to me is that Nora's people are trying to sweep this one under the rug. Exactly the kind of qualities we need in the Surrogate.
Oh, and while we're under the rug, I'm still trying to figure out how Jim McManus fits into all of this. Why is there always a tinge of scandal in everything McManus or his people touches?
Posted by: McManus Club Member 3 | July 29, 2008 12:45 AM
A postscript for Mr. Flaks: Are we to guess who is the woodcutter, priest, bandit, sumurai, and sumurai's wife?
This escapade is more like "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."
Posted by: McManus Club Member 3 | July 29, 2008 12:54 AM
Enough is enough! Jim McManus and Singh BOTH called and offered heartfelt apologies that evening although neither had anything to be sorry for!
Bernie is what he is and always will be.
We should all have better things to do than continue to worry about this any longer. Lets all go back to worrying about real politics and elections.
Posted by: Eben Bronfman | July 29, 2008 7:38 AM
Mr. Bronfman:
In your professional career (with the DA's office), how many prosecutions have your people taken to trial after the victim refused to cooperate or "forgave" the perp?
Your willingness to forgive, while mentchie, is not the real issue here.
A crime was committed, you and your daughter were physically attacked, but you and others are willing to turn a blind eye in the name of politics.
We should all be troubled by that.
Posted by: Sy Mann | July 29, 2008 10:08 AM
Is this the same Bernie Cohen that's married to that Manhattan judge Doris Ling Cohen?
Talk about politics....a sitting judge with a husband that's a thug.

Hey, I know all of you guys, and there was a fight and you didn't cut me in on the action? How come I'm like the guy on cheers, who always seems to be out of the room when the big events go down? And how come Milt wasn't there? He and I would have put all of you guys on the floor. Except for Singh, of course. I wouldn't mess with him: he knows Bill Clinton.

I would have kicked some ass!

Oh, I should mention on a serious note, to McManus Club Patrol: Doris Ling "Cohen" is actually Doris Ling COHAN and I am quite sure that her husband is not the same person. That is how rumors get started!
Posted by: Steven De Castro | July 29, 2008 12:14 PM
Bernie Cohen is not related in anyway to Judge Doris Ling-Cohan. The names are not even spelled the same.

Club Patrol got it half right, Ernie was/is dating Dorothy Chin-Brandt, a Judge of the Civil Court.
